“In the Footsteps of Marco Polo”
In this post we wanted to continue highlighting adventurers who we find inspiring and motivating. We came across the PBS Special “In the Footsteps of Marco polo” in the early 2000’s and were captivated by the program.
“In the Footsteps of Marco Polo”, highlights an amazing journey taken by Denis Belliveau and Francis O’Donnell, two modern explorers who set out to retrace Marco Polo’s entire 25,000-mile, Silk Road route from Venice to China and back. To make their dream a reality, this incredible achievement took them two years of their lives, and you can follow along by watching the entire program at the following link.

“Equal parts travelogue, adventure story, history trek and buddy movie, the 90-minute film weaves footage from the duo’s often perilous voyage with Marco Polo’s descriptions and experiences. Richly enhanced with Belliveau’s award-winning photographs, the program details their highs and lows as they retrace Polo’s path, trying to see what he saw and feel what he must have felt.
But as fascinating as the world looked through Marco Polo’s eyes, is the world and the people Belliveau and O’Donnell saw through their own. “Travel is the enemy of bigotry,” says O’Donnell. “There’s a lot more good people on the planet than bad…Get out there, meet [people], they’re good,” adds Belliveau.”
It’s been a few years since I’ve watched the film, but it’s worth every minute. The situations these gentleman experience and the people they interact with, make this a must see for anyone who aspires for adventure. And the end is priceless.
